New Japan Pro Wrestling acaba de realizar una nueva edición del G1 Climax, torneo de lucha libre considerado como el más importante en el mundo. La edición 34 tuvo como ganador a Zack Sabre Jr., luchador británico considerado como el mejor luchador técnico en el mundo. ZSJ entró a una lista selecta y se convirtió en el segundo extranjero en ganar el torneo.
NJPW aprovechó la jornada final del G1 Climax 34 para confirmar Royal Quest IV, una nueva edición de su icónico evento en Reino Unido, para el 20 de octubre en Crystal Palace, Londres. Antes de que se realice este nuevo evento en Europa y Capital Collision el 30 de agosto en Washington, DC, Pep S. Caro tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Hiroshi Tanahashi, Presidente de NJPW. El legendario luchador conocido como “The Ace” respondió varias de las preguntas de Pep. Los temas fueron el G1 Climax 34, Capital Collision, Royal Quest IV, Wrestle Dynasty, Stardom, Konosuke Takeshita, Boltin Oleg, compaginar su trabajo como Presidente con el de luchador y más.

Entrevista con Hiroshi Tanahashi (NJPW): Lo profesional y lo personal (Spanish & English)
Pep: El 10 de octubre de 2024 celebrarás tu 25 Aniversario como luchador profesional. ¿Cuáles consideras tus momentos favoritos de tu carrera? En esa misma línea, en King of Pro Wrestling habrá una celebración especial por su aniversario. ¿Qué tipo de combate te gustaría tener en el evento? ¿Qué pueden esperar los fans que asistan al show?
Hiroshi: Debo decir que al menos mi combate más memorable fue el 4 de enero de 2009 contra Keiji Muto. De hecho, estaba tan nervioso antes del combate que toda esa energía reprimida salió de mí y comencé a llorar. En cuanto a Ryogoku en octubre, no hay nada oficial todavía, pero me gustaría que mi combate de aniversario fuera un combate individual con alguien.
Pep: En diciembre de 2023 te convertiste en presidente de NJPW. ¿Cómo ha sido compaginar tu trabajo como luchador con tu trabajo de oficina? ¿Cuáles considera que han sido los mayores desafíos en tus primeros 6 meses en el cargo?
Hiroshi: Si no tengo que competir ese día, estaré en la oficina de lunes a viernes. Como presidente, hay muchas cosas de las que tengo que hacer seguimiento y muchas cosas que tengo que aprender. Paso mucho tiempo estudiando y eso significa que es difícil encontrar tiempo para ir al gimnasio y entrenar, pero siento que he podido lograr un equilibrio decente.
Pep: A pesar de ser uno de los que más veces ha ganado el torneo, no participaste en el G1 Climax 34. ¿Te arrepientes de ello? ¿Está satisfecho con la actuación de Boltin Oleg, tu actual compañero?
Hiroshi: Durante muchos años, la llegada del verano ha significado el G1 para mí. Así que no estar allí fue definitivamente una sensación extraña. Sin embargo, Boltin es una verdadera fuerza de la naturaleza y en cada combate en el que participó pude sentir que estaba mejorando constantemente. Será algo muy especial en el futuro.
Pep: Konosuke Takeshita de AEW te retó públicamente a tener un combate después de que termine el G1 Climax 34. En su primer y único combate individual entre sí, hace 10 años, derrotaste a un joven Takeshita. ¿Cuándo podemos esperar que suceda ese combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes actualmente de Takeshita como competidor?
Hiroshi: Creo que de todos los presentes en el G1 de este año, Takeshita podría ser el que se sentía más a gusto con su estilo y lo que hacía en el ring. Desde que luchamos hace diez años, obviamente se ha vuelto mucho más grande, pero todo lo que hace tiene mucha más repercusión y significado. Me encantaría luchar con esta versión de Takeshita.
Pep: El 30 de agosto, en NJPW Capital Collision 2024, volverás a formar equipo con Tomohiro Ishii para enfrentar a TMDK y a los debutantes Grizzled Young Veterans para ser los próximos retadores por los Campeonatos en Parejas NJPW Strong. ¿Cómo ha sido tu preparación para este combate? ¿Cómo ha sido tu comunicación con Ishii quien actualmente trabaja con AEW?
Hiroshi: Es genial formar equipo con Ishii nuevamente. Realmente me inspiró ver lo que pudo hacer durante su viaje a los EE. UU. este verano y trabajaré duro para seguirle el ritmo en DC.

Hiroshi: Creo que Wrestle Dynasty el 5 de enero será un evento clave para llevar a NJPW a un nuevo nivel de conciencia internacional. También espero que los luchadores que viajen a Japón puedan expresarse al máximo ante nuestros fans japoneses.
Pep: Ahora que Stardom es una subsidiaria de NJPW, mencionaste que podemos esperar una mayor sinergia entre ambas compañías y que los luchadores de Stardom aparecerán en NJPW. ¿Con qué frecuencia veremos participar al talento de Stardom en los shows de NJPW?
Hiroshi: Con NJPW y STARDOM tenemos el beneficio de dos promociones distintas, con, en términos generales, también diferentes bases de fans. En este momento hay cruces de forma limitada, y creo que este nivel de distancia es el adecuado para este preciso momento. Tendremos Historic X-Over 2 en noviembre, será un gran evento para celebrar a ambas compañías.
Pep: NJPW suele ser muy activa en Europa, concretamente en Reino Unido. Los nuevos talentos de Japón suelen participar en RevPro, empresa en la que fuiste Campeón Mundial, y también lideran la gira Royal Quest que se acaba de anunciar. ¿Qué podemos esperar de esteshow?
Hiroshi: Acabamos de anunciar nuestro regreso al Reino Unido el 20 de octubre para Royal Quest IV y siempre es genial estar frente a los apasionados fans de allí. En cuanto al resto de Europa. Creo que la lucha libre trasciende todas las barreras del idioma, y definitivamente es una de mis ambiciones llevar NJPW a audiencias nuevas y más amplias.
Pep: Si pudieras traer a cualquier luchador del mundo para competir contra ti, al que aún no te hayas enfrentado, ¿a quién elegirías?
Hiroshi: ¡He luchado con casi todos las personas posibles! Pero si vamos a pura fantasía entonces tendría que decir Antonio Inoki.
Pep: ¿Tienes algún mensaje para los fans de Latinoamérica y España? Son países donde se habla español, y donde los fans siguen tu trabajo y te apoyan, a pesar de la distancia y la barrera del idioma.

Pep: On October 10, 2024 you will celebrate your 25th Anniversary as a professional wrestler. What do you consider your favorite moments of your career? Along those same lines, at King of Pro Wrestling there will be a special celebration for your anniversary. What kind of match would you like to have at the event? What can fans who attend the show expect?
Hiroshi: I’d have to say my most memorable match at least was January 4 2009 with Keiji Muto. I was actually so nervous going into that match that all that pent up energy came out of me and I started crying. As for Ryogoku in October, nothing’s official yet, but I’d like my anniversary match to be a singles match with someone.
Pep: In December 2023 you became the President of NJPW. What has it been like to combine your work as a wrestler with your office job? What do you consider to have been the biggest challenges in your first 6 months in office?
Hiroshi: If I don’t have a match, then I’m in the office Monday to Friday. As a President, there’s an awful lot I have to keep track of, and a lot of things I have to learn. I spend a lot of time studying, and that means it’s hard to find time to hit the gym and train, but I feel I’ve been able to strike a decent balance.
Pep: You didn’t participate in the G1 Climax 34. Do you have any regrets about this? Are you satisfied with the performance of Boltin Oleg, your current teammate?
Hiroshi: For so many years, summer coming around has meant the G1 to me. So not to be in it was definitely a strange feeling. Boltin is a real force of nature though, and every match he was in, I could feel he was steadily improving. He’ll be something very special.
Pep: AEW’s Konosuke Takeshita publicly challenged you to have a match after G1 Climax 34 ends.In your first and only match, 10 years ago, you defeated a young Takeshita. When can we expect that match to happen? What impressions do you currently have of Takeshita as a competitor?
Hiroshi: I think out of everyone in this year’s G1, Takeshita might be the one that was most at home with his style and what he did in the ring. Since we wrestled ten years ago, obviously visibly he’s gotten a lot bigger, but everything he does has a lot more gravity and significance. I’d love to wrestle this version of Takeshita.
Pep: On August 30, at NJPW Capital Collision 2024, you will team up again with Tomohiro Ishii to face TMDK and the debuting Grizzled Young Veterans to be the N°1 Contenders for the NJPW Strong Tag Team Championships. How has your preparation been for this match? How has your communication been with Ishii who is currently working with AEW?
Hiroshi: It’s great to team with Ishii again. I’ve really been inspired seeing what he’s been able to do during his trip to the US this summer, and I’ll be working hard to keep up with him in DC.
Pep: NJPW announced Wrestle Dynasty in Japan for January 2025. This crossover will feature talent from 5 different promotions. What can we expect of this show in the Tokyo Dome?
Hiroshi: Wrestle Dynasty on January 5 I feel is going to be a key event in bringing NJPW to a new level of international awareness. I hope as well that those wrestlers making the trip over to Japan will be able to express themselves to the fullest to our Japanese fans.
Pep: Now that Stardom is a subsidiary of NJPW, you mentioned that we can expect greater synergy between both companies and that Stardom wrestlers will appear in NJPW. How often will we see Stardom talent participate in NJPW shows?
Hiroshi: With NJPW and STARDOM we have the benefit of two distinct promotions, with broadly speaking different fanbases as well. Right now there’s crossover on a limited basis, and I think this level of distance is just about right for this moment in time. Historic X-Over 2 in November will be a great event to celebrate both companies.
Pep: NJPW is usually very active in Europe, specifically in the United Kingdom. New Japan talent usually participates in RevPro, a company in which you were World Champion, and you also lead the Royal Quest tour which was just announced. What can we expect of this show?
Hiroshi: We just announced our return to the UK on October 20 for Royal Quest IV and it’s always great to be in front of the passionate fans there. As for the rest of Europe. I believe wrestling transcends every language barrier, and it’s definitely an ambition of mine to bring NJPW to new and wider audiences.
Pep: If you could bring any wrestler in the world to compete against you, that you haven’t faced yet, who would you choose? Why him or her? Could you give us a couple of examples?
Hiroshi: I’ve wrestled pretty much everybody there is! But if we’re going pure fantasy then I’d have to say Antonio Inoki.
Pep: Do you have any message for your fans in Latin America and Spain? They are countries where Spanish is spoken, and where fans follow your work and support you, despite the distance and the language barrier.
Hiroshi: We’re proud of the unique chemistry we create in the ring with our wrestlers and fans. That includes the best wrestlers in Latin America and the incredible fans we have there and worldwide!
