Antes de que se realice este importante evento en Japón, Pep S. Caro tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Naomichi. “The Genius of the Ark” respondió varias de las preguntas de Pep. Entrevista con Naomichi Marufuji (NOAH): Lo profesional y lo personal
Pep: Tu eres sinónimo de Pro Wrestling NOAH y también eres conocido como “The Genius of the Ark”. Luego de cumplir 25 años como luchador profesional, ¿cuáles consideras tus momentos favoritos en NOAH? ¿A qué consideras que se debe tu éxito en la lucha libre?
Naomichi: El mejor momento siempre es cuando estoy en NOAH. Cuando estoy aquí y los fans todavía me animan. La razón por la que he podido permanecer activo durante tanto tiempo es porque me encanta la lucha libre. Estoy agradecido no sólo conmigo mismo sino también con las personas que me rodean.
Pep: Llevas más de 10 años en un puesto administrativo en NOAH, siendo el Vicepresidente de la compañía. ¿Cuáles consideras que han sido tus desafíos más grandes en la gestión? ¿Cómo ha sido para ti compaginar tus deberes administrativos con tus deberes en el ring?
Naomichi: La importancia de ser un ícono de NOAH en lugar de tener un trabajo específico como gerente. Muchos grandes predecesores han abandonado la organización, pero me alegraría si la gente pensara que “NOAH está bien y fuerte cuando Marufuji está cerca”.
Pep: En ambos shows de All Together 2024 competiste como parte del “Puro Presidential Team” con Hiroshi Tanahashi, Sanshiro Takagi (en Tokyo) y Kento Miyahara (en Hokkaido). ¿Cuáles fueron tus sensaciones en estos combates haciendo equipo con los líderes de otras organizaciones? ¿Qué consideras que debe hacer UJPW para apoyar el crecimiento de la lucha libre japonesa como industria?
Naomichi: Sentí profundamente que cada uno de ellos ama la organización en la que está y la lucha libre. Para el desarrollo del mundo de la lucha libre japonesa, sentí que es importante compartir información y no involucrarse demasiado en el ring. Sería un desperdicio si nos quedáramos estancados o perdiéramos nuestra frescura.
Pep: En NOAH Grand Ship 2024 in Yokohama, volviste a ganar los GHC Tag Team Championships con Takashi Sugiura, luego de vencer a GLG (Jack Morris y Anthony Greene). ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas para este nuevo reinado? El reinado de GLG tuvo varias defensas sorpresivas, ¿podemos esperar desafíos de talento internacional en este nuevo reinado?
Naomichi: Creo que Sugiura puede tener un gran combate de defensa con cualquier luchador. Por supuesto, también me gustaría luchar contra luchadores extranjeros.
Pep: Participaste en el show y combate estelar del 20 aniversario de Go Shiozaki, haciendo equipo con Takashi Sugiura para enfrentarte a Jun Akiyama y a Shiozaki. Un Dream Match que parecía imposible porque Styles ha estado en la escena titular de WWE hasta el día previo al anuncio. ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas para este combate? ¿Cuáles son tus pensamientos sobre Styles como competidor? ¿Qué crees que les espera a los fanáticos que vean este combate? ¿Podemos esperar que el talento de NOAH compita en la WWE a continuación?
Naomichi: Él (Styles) es un gran luchador en todos los sentidos y uno de los mejores del mundo. Quiero que los aficionados disfruten de verdad de mis intercambios durante el combate con él. Y creo que podemos conseguirlo.
Pep: Dentro de poco se anunciarán los participantes del N1 Victory 2024. Naomichi: En cuanto al torneo N1 Victory, todavía no lo sé. Pero espero que sea un torneo de liga que brinde oportunidades a los jugadores jóvenes tanto de casa como del extranjero.
Pep: Este año, NOAH vuelve a realizar giras fuera de Japón y ya tienen fechas anunciadas para septiembre en Reino Unido y octubre en Alemania. En el pasado, NOAH ha participado de eventos en Perú, Chile, Brasil y México. ¿Qué expectativas tienes para estas gira? ¿Qué les espera a los fanáticos que asistirán? ¿Hay planes para visitar algún otro país o continente?
Naomichi: El propósito de la gira en el extranjero es que más personas conozcan NOAH, la organización y los luchadores de nuestro plantel. Quiero que la mayor cantidad de gente posible vea estos eventos.

Naomichi: Me retiraré algún día de la lucha libre profesional, pero todavía no planeo tomar el “camino del retiro o de la jubilación”. Me gustaría luchar en varios países alrededor del mundo antes de eso. Con NOAH, por supuesto.

Pep: You are synonymous with Pro Wrestling NOAH and are also known as “The Genius of the Ark”. After celebrating 25 years as a professional wrestler, what do you consider your favorite moments in NOAH? What do you think is the reason for your success in wrestling and keeping active for so long?
Naomichi: The best moment is always when I’m in NOAH. When I’m here and the fans are still cheering for me. The reason I have been able to stay active for so long is because I love wrestling. I am grateful not only to myself but also to the people around me.
Pep: You have been in an administrative position at NOAH for more than 10 years, being the Vice President of the company. What do you consider to have been your biggest challenges in management? What has it been like for you to combine your administrative duties with your duties in the ring?
Naomichi: The importance of being an icon of NOAH rather than having a specific job as a manager. Many great predecessors have left the organization, but I would be happy if people think that “NOAH is there well and strong when Marufuji is around”.
Pep: In both All Together 2024 shows you competed as part of the “Puro Presidential Team” with Hiroshi Tanahashi from NJPW, Sanshiro Takagi from DDT Pro (in Tokyo) and Kento Miyahara from AJPW (in Hokkaido). What were your feelings in these matches teaming up with the leaders of other organizations? What do you think UJPW should do to support the growth of Japanese wrestling as an industry?
Naomichi: I felt deeply that each of them loves their own organization and wrestling. For the development of the Japanese wrestling world, I felt that it is important to share information and not to be involved too much in the ring. It would be a waste if we get stuck in a rut or lose our freshness.
Pep: At NOAH Grand Ship 2024 in Yokohama, you won the GHC Tag Team Championships again with Takashi Sugiura, after defeating GLG (Jack Morris and Anthony Greene). What are your expectations for this new reign? GLG’s reign had several surprise defenses, can we expect challenges from international talent in this new reign?
Naomichi: I believe that Sugiura can have a great defense match with any wrestler. Of course, I would like to wrestle against foreign wrestlers as well.
Pep: You participated in the Go Shiozaki 20th anniversary show and main event, teaming up with Takashi Sugiura to face Jun Akiyama and Shiozaki. It was an emotional event because it also celebrated the 15th anniversary of Mitsuharu Misawa’s death and we had a special visit from Kenta Kobashi. What were your feelings participating in this match and this event? What does Shiozaki mean to you? What does Misawa mean to you?
Naomichi: I think it is great for Shiozaki to celebrate his 20th anniversary here in NOAH. There is no doubt that he is an indispensable part of NOAH’s history. Mr. Misawa will always remain an important part of my life as a wrestler and as a person.
Pep: At NOAH DESTINATION 2024, we will have the first confrontation between two wrestlers considered the best of their generations: Naomichi Marufuji vs AJ Styles. A Dream Match that seemed impossible because Styles had been in the WWE title scene until the day before the announcement. What are your expectations for this match? What are your thoughts on Styles as a competitor? What do you think is in store for fans watching this match? Can we expect NOAH talent competing in WWE next?
Naomichi: He (Styles) is an all-around great wrestler and one of the best in the world. I want the fans to genuinely enjoy my exchanges during the match with him. And I think we can achieve that.
Pep: The participants of N1 Victory 2024 will be announced shortly. This year NJPW’s G1 Climax announced some changes for its next edition that have been positively received by fans. There are wrestlers like Titus Alexander who have asked to be included among this year’s participants. Can we expect changes to the structure or rules of the tournament? Is there a chance to see wrestlers from West Coast Pro, WWE or another allied company?
Naomichi: As for the N1 Victory tournament, I don’t know yet. But I hope it will be a league tournament that gives opportunities to young wrestlers both from home and from abroad.
Pep: This year, NOAH is touring outside of Japan again after a long time and they already have dates announced for September in the United Kingdom and October in Germany. In the past, NOAH has also participated in events in Peru, Chile, Brazil and Mexico. What expectations do you have for these tours? What’s in store for fans attending? Are there plans to visit any other countries or continents?
Naomichi: The purpose of the overseas tour is to let more people know about NOAH, the organization, and the wrestlers from our roster. I want as many people as possible to see these events.
Pep: We want to know a little more about Naomichi Marufuji, the person. Could you tell us your hobbies? Could you tell us what a typical day in the life of Naomichi Marufuji is like?
Naomichi: My hobbies include collecting sneakers and anime figures. I have a habit of collecting things.
Pep: Last year you faced Shinsuke Nakamura in The Great Muta’s farewell match and this time you will face AJ Styles. Both wrestlers are currently in WWE and with a past in NJPW. Is there any other wrestler from WWE or another international company that you haven’t faced yet that you would like to face and why would it be him? Do you want it to be in a NOAH ring or would you like it to be in the ring of the company to which that wrestler belongs?
Naomichi: I am interested in all WWE wrestlers. I want to invite various wrestlers to NOAH’s ring. To compete in the WWE ring, I think I need more training before that, so I can’t say it right now.
Pep: We know that you are currently on your “Retirement Road”, but could you tell us what goals you have for the remainder of 2024? What do you think you should achieve before retiring from professional wrestling?
Naomichi: I will retire someday, but I don’t plan to take the “retirement road” yet. I would like to wrestle in various countries around the world before that. With NOAH, of course.
