Para finalizar abril, Pep S. Caro tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a El Desperado. El carismático luchador y Campeón IWGP Peso Pesado Junior respondió varias de las preguntas de Pep, a unos días de su próxima defensa del Campeonato en NJPW.

Entrevista con El Desperado (NJPW): Lo profesional y lo personal (Spanish & English)
Pep: Actualmente estás en tu quinto reinado como Campeón Peso Pesado Junior de la IWGP. ¿Qué significa el Campeonato para ti? ¿Es tu responsabilidad liderar la división Jr. de New Japan?
Despe: El título Junior de la IWGP es uno de los mayores tesoros de NJPW como compañía. Significa que debes tener combates de la mejor calidad del mundo, y significa que, como campeón, soy responsable de tener los mejores combates en la cartelera. Tengo que representar bien a la organización como campeón.
Pep: Tu primera defensa fue contra Taiji Ishimori de Bullet Club, un gran rival tuyo. Él te derrotó en el Gauntlet en WRESTLE DYNASTY, pero tú lo derrotaste en el combate por el título en BATTLE IN THE VALLEY 2025. ¿Cómo te sentiste en ese combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Ishimori como competidor?
Despe: (Taiji) Ishimori es un luchador increíble, muy duro y fue muy divertido. Esta fue la primera vez que luchamos en Estados Unidos, y la primera vez que el título Junior de la IWGP fue el evento principal en ese país. Así que, aunque no presto mucha atención al lugar ni a la ciudad donde lucho, creo que esta vez había muchos fans esperando ver esto, y definitivamente sentí su emoción.
Pep: Luego te enfrentaste a Kosei Fujita de TMDK, uno de los jóvenes exponentes de la división Jr., en ROAD TO THE NEW BEGINNING 2025. ¿Cómo te sentiste en ese combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Fujita como competidor?
Despe: (Kosei) Fujita es un excelente luchador. Tiene muchas herramientas a su disposición, pero es bueno eligiendo qué hacer y cuándo. Muchos luchadores jóvenes estarán emocionados por demostrar todo lo que pueden hacer, pero Fujita es lo suficientemente inteligente como para elegir y dejar algunas cosas fuera de su juego a menos que tengan sentido.
Pep: Luego te enfrentaste a Francesco Akira de United Empire, un luchador consolidado de la división Jr., en el 53.º aniversario de NJPW. ¿Cómo te sentiste en ese combate? ¿Qué te pareció Akira como competidor?
Despe: (Francesco) Akira ha progresado muchísimo. Ya lo dije en otra ocasión, pero creo que en ese combate sentí cómo sus fortalezas y mi estilo encajaban a la perfección. Tiene hambre y pasión. Creo que muchos luchadores deberían aprender de su ejemplo en ese sentido.
Pep: En tu defensa más reciente, te enfrentaste a Clark Connors de War Dogs en un combate Hardcore en SAKURA Jr. GENESIS 2025. ¿Cómo te sentiste en ese combate? ¿Qué te pareció Connors como competidor?
Despe: Ese combate Hardcore fue durísimo. Pero fue increíble. (Clark) Connors es un luchador excepcional, y lo que hicimos en ese combate marcó un hito. Si alguna vez hay otro combate hardcore por el título de New Japan, tendrán que intentar superar lo que hicimos nosotros.
Pep: Considerando esta defensa, has tenido la oportunidad de explorar tu lado más violento. Te hemos visto en combates NO DQ o DEATH MATCH antes, en 2024 contra Chris Brookes y recientemente contra Jun Kasai y Masashi Takeda. ¿Cómo es tu preparación física y mental para combates como este?
Despe: Realmente no hay ninguna diferencia entre prepararse para un combate hardcore o para cualquier otro tipo de combate, al menos en mi opinión. A veces tengo que cambiar mi vestuario o cómo me vendo, porque eso puede provocar accidentes y lesiones. Pero eso es todo. Mentalmente, hay mucha tensión, muchos nervios.
Pep: Templario de CMLL, al igual que Akira, miembro de United Empire, te retó a un combate por el Campeonato. Defenderás el cinturón en Wrestling Hizen no Kuni. ¿Qué te parece Templario como competidor?
Despe: Templario es un luchador muy completo. Potencia, velocidad, resistencia y técnica de alto nivel. He hecho equipo con él muchas veces y siempre me ha parecido un gran compañero, pero eso me hace aún más consciente de lo peligroso que es como oponente.
Pep: Nos acercamos a una nueva edición de Best of the Super Juniors. Este año, participas como Campeón Jr. de IWGP y ganador de la edición anterior. ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas para la 32va edición?
Despe: Creo que la alineación de BOSJ es fantástica este año. Realmente tienes a los mejores juniors del mundo, listos para demostrar lo grandiosa que puede ser la división.
Pep: Un amigo y rival tuyo, MAO de DDT, finalmente cumplirá su sueño de competir en Best of the Super Juniors. ¿Qué te interesaría un posible combate con MAO?
Despe: Por supuesto, quiero enfrentarme a MAO. ¡Lo admiro mucho! No creo que haya nadie en la lucha libre que encarne mejor el espíritu de hacer exactamente lo que quieres hacer.
Pep: Hiroshi Tanahashi se encuentra actualmente en su gira de retiro. Nunca se han enfrentado en un combate individual. Considerando que alguna vez compitiste por el Campeonato Peso Pesado de la IWGP, ¿te gustaría enfrentarte a Tanahashi antes de su retiro?
Despe: Definitivamente quiero enfrentarme a (Hiroshi) Tanahashi. Fue alguien que realmente me explicó la lucha libre profesional con palabras que podía entender. Fueron palabras que me dijo hace 15 años las que me moldearon en el luchador que soy hoy.
Pep: Finalmente, te hemos visto competir en combates intergénero en 2024. Primero, haciendo equipo con Mima Shimoda para enfrentar a Dragon Kid y Starlight Kid, y luego haciendo equipo con SLK para enfrentar a Zack Sabre Jr. y Maika. SLK ya ha declarado que quiere tener un combate individual contigo. ¿Qué otro combate intergénero te gustaría tener?
Despe: No me interesa participar en combates intergénero solo por hacerlos, pero si se presenta la oportunidad y tiene sentido, sin duda lo haría. Me gustaría luchar contra Aoi de JTO, DASH Chisako de Sendai Girls y tanto Maika como Suzu Suzuki de STARDOM.

Pep: You’re currently in your 5th reign as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. What does the Championship mean to you? Is it your responsibility to lead New Japan’s Jr. division?
Despe: The IWGP Junior title is one of NJPW’s biggest treasures as a company. It means that you have to have the absolute best quality matches in the world, and it means as champion, I’m responsible for having the best matches on the card. I have to represent well as champion.
Pep: Your first defense was against Bullet Club’s Taiji Ishimori, a great rival of yours. He defeated you in the Gauntlet at WRESTLE DYNASTY, but you defeated him in the title match at BATTLE IN THE VALLEY 2025. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Ishimori as a competitor?
Despe: (Taiji) Ishimori is an incredible wrestler, very tough and it was a lot of fun. This was the first time we’d wrestled each other in the US, and the first time for the IWGP Junior title to be headlining in the US. So even though I really don’t pay much attention to the venue I’m wrestling in, or what town I’m at, this time I think there was a lot of fans who had been waiting to see this, and I definitely felt how excited they were.
Pep: You then faced TMDK’s Kosei Fujita, one of the young exponents of the Jr. division, at ROAD TO THE NEW BEGINNING 2025. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Fujita as a competitor?
Despe: (Kosei) Fujita is an excellent wrestler. He has a lot of strings to his bow, but he’s good at choosing what to do when. A lot of young wrestlers will be excited about showing everything that they can do, but Fujita’s smart enough to pick and choose, and leave some things out of his game unless they make sense.
Pep: You then faced United Empire’s Francesco Akira, an established wrestler in the Jr. division, at NJPW’s 53rd Anniversary. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Akira as a competitor?
Despe: (Francesco) Akira’s made incredible strides. I said this elsewhere, but I think with that match I felt how his strengths and my style really gelled with each other. He’s hungry, and he’s passionate. I think there’s a lot of wrestlers that should learn from his example in that regard.
Pep: In your most recent defense, you faced War Dogs’s Clark Connors in a Hardcore match at SAKURA Jr. GENESIS 2025. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Connors as a competitor?
Despe: That hardcore match was damn tough. But it was awesome. (Clark) Connors is a hell of a wrestler, and what we did with that match was set a bar. Now if there’s ever another hardcore match for a New Japan title, they’ll have to try and outdo what we did.
Pep: Considering this defense, you’ve had the opportunity to explore your more violent side. We’ve seen you in NO DQ or DEATH MATCH matches before, in 2024 against Chris Brookes and recently against Jun Kasai and Masashi Takeda. What’s your physical and mental preparation like for matches like this?
Despe: There really isn’t any difference preparing yourself for a hardcore match or any other kind of match, at least in my opinion. Sometimes I might have to change my costume or how I tape myself up, because that can lead to accidents and injury otherwise. But that’s about it. Mentally, there’s a lot of tension, a lot of nerves.
Pep: Templario of CMLL, like Akira, a member of United Empire, challenged you to a Championship match. You will defend the belt at Wrestling Hizen no Kuni. What are your impressions of Templario as a competitor?
Despe: Templario is a really well rounded wrestler. Power, speed, stamina, technique all at a high level. I’ve teamned with him a lot and I’ve always found him to be a great partner, but that makes me all the more aware of how dangerous he is as an opponent.
Pep: We’re approaching a new edition of the Best of the Super Juniors. This year, you enter the tournament as the IWGP Jr. Champion and the winner of the previous edition. What are your expectations for the 32nd edition?
Despe: I think the BOSJ lineup is tremendous this year. You really have the world’s best juniors in there, and ready to show how great the division can be.
Pep: A friend and rival of yours, MAO of DDT, will finally fulfill his dream of competing in the Best of the Super Juniors. What is your interest in a potential match with MAO?
Despe: Of course, I want to face MAO. I really admire him! I don’t think there’s anybody in wrestling who more embodies the spirit of doing exactly what you want to do.
Pep: Hiroshi Tanahashi is currently on his retirement tour. You have never faced each other in a singles match. Considering that you once competed for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, would you like to face Tanahashi before his retirement?
Despe: I definitely want to face Tanahashi. He was someone that really put pro-wrestling into words that I could understand to me. It was words he told me 15 years ago that moulded me into the wrestler I am today.
Pep: Finally, we’ve seen you compete in intergender matches in 2024. First, teaming with Mima Shimoda to face Dragon Kid and Starlight Kid, then teaming with SLK to face Zack Sabre Jr. and Maika. SLK has previously stated that she wants to have a singles match with you. What other intergender match would you like to have?
Despe: I’m not interested in doing intergender matches just to do them, but if the chance is there and it makes sense I absolutely would. I’d like to wrestle Aoi from JTO, DASH Chisako from Sendai Girls, and Maika and Suzu Suzuki from STARDOM.
Pep: To conclude this interview, do you have any message for your fans around the world?
Despe: Hey, friends!
Mexico is my second home. I’ll definitely be back at Arena México to fight.
